During the ECN’s 6th Annual Workshop: Designing for Excellence, the Georgia Tech Alumni Association's Kara Petracek, vice president of Events and Campus Relations, and Mora Hostetter, senior event manager, discussed how they have "re-engineered" their Gold & White Honors Gala.
In 2003, the Georgia Tech Alumni Association developed an event that would celebrate Georgia Tech’s leadership and serve as a fundraiser in support of Alumni Association student programs. At that time, there were various ways in which the awards were given out. In 2013, the presenters re-engineered the gala to broaden the exposure to Tech’s servant-leaders - Tech students and the community. The redesign allowed organizers to honor Georgia Tech’s alumni and leaders, while also developing future leaders, the current students attending Georgia Tech. A position statement was created along with the tag line "Inspiring Extraordinary."
The Alumni Association uses the Gold & White Honors Gala as a “pay it forward” event that generates sponsorships and partnerships with companies and the surrounding Georgia Tech community. Components of the event include a silent auction, reception, dinner, and awards ceremony that awards the following honors:
- Joseph Mayo Pettit Alumni Distinguished Service Award
- Dean Griffin Community Service Award
- Outstanding Young Alumni Award
- Honorary Alumnus Award
Last year’s gala raised more than $411,000 to support student development through the Alumni Association's student programs. The 2015 event will be held in February, with Kimberly-Clark serving is the presenting sponsor.
